Preservation Treatment – Original Preserved and Protected
At CG-Carworks, we recently had the privilege of working on a truly special classic: a completely original 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL. A rare sight, as this car has never been fully restored and still retains its authentic condition – including the original interior and leather.
Instead of a restoration, we chose our specialty: a preservation treatment. This approach focuses on maintaining, protecting, and refining without erasing the car’s history.
Original Leather – Restored to Supple and Lively Condition
The original leather of this 190SL had dried out and become stiff, but was still in good condition. Instead of replacing it, we deeply nourished, softened, and revitalized it using specially developed leather care products. This way, the original character and authentic look remain intact – something that would be lost with new leather.
The Underside – Saying Goodbye to Black Tectyl
Another key part of the treatment was the complete cleaning of the car’s underside. Like many classics, this Mercedes had previously been coated with a thick layer of black Tectyl.
We completely removed this Tectyl layer to inspect what was underneath. And, as is often the case, some surprises appeared: small rust spots and old repairs that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
That’s why we always advise: remove the Tectyl if you truly want to know the condition of your classic. Only then can you protect it in a targeted and responsible way.
